Travelling within the UK

There are many options for getting around London - and the Tube is probably the most efficient way.

Buses are also a popular means of transport, in particular the areas not serviced by the tube. You can purchase daily, weekly, monthly or even annual Travelcards that permit you travel on buses, trains and tubes operating in zones 1-6.

London Underground (the 'Tube')

It's the most economical way of getting around - buy an Oyster Card which is a reusable 'smart' card and offers cheaper fares than buying individual tickets. Oyster Cards can also be used on London buses and some National Rail lines.

Coaches

A popular low cost option for longer distance travel. Cheaper than rail travel, it's also slower and less frequent.

The largest coach companies in the UK are

Taxis

Black cabs operate locally within each major city of the UK. They can be expensive, particularly in London where the traffic is often heavy, as you are charged for the time you spend in the cab. There are a number of commercial taxi companies that can be hailed, booked in advance or hired from taxi ranks. Don't use unlicensed minicabs - there is no guarantee they have the appropriate insurance or even a driving licence.

Cycling

Cycling is a popular transport option for many Londoners. Barclays Cycle scheme offers short-term bicycle hire from hundreds of pick up points around the city. Available 24 hours a day, all year round, it's self-service and there's no booking required. Superhighways are cycle lanes into central London that provide cyclists with safer, faster and more direct journeys into the city.
